Captain Hannibal Grant was the great grandfather of Reverend Grant, who is the fifth generation of the Grant family in India. Captain Grant was one of the first members of his family to travel to India as an employee of the East India Company from the UK.

Originally from Aberdeen, Scotland, he arrived in Vizag (Visakhapatnam) in 1857 as a merchant. He obtained a Naval commission with the East India Company between the years  1857-1867 as “Ship Attendant”, later promoted to “Master Attendant” . Under the East India Company, he went on to travel to Calicut (Kozhikode) and Negapatam (Nagapattinam), where he retired.

On 19th October 1857, Captain Grant got married to Sarah Jones at the port town of Vizagapatam (Vishakhapatnam).

He continued to live in India after retirement and didn’t feel the need to go back to Britain.
